Les Iris (in French only)

Les Iris

Les Éditions de l'Homme

Rejean D. Millette

Fall is swiftly approaching. It is the time to plant Irises for bloom next spring and summer. Before deciding which iris you should grow you should read Les Iris (in French) by Reggie D. Millette. This book was published by Les Édition de l"homme in 2007 and is available at info@millettephotomedia.com

The book Les Iris was is written by Reggie D. Millette who also wrote books on Hostas (2003) and Daylilies (2005) also in French has grown Iris of various types in Quebec, Canada. After travelling to Oregon where the major growers are established and meeting with them, this gives him outstanding qualifications to write this book. He bases his recommendations for growing the various Iris species by studying the proper conditions for them to grow well.

First you will read the forewords written by David Schreiner and Tony Huber, both very well known in the world of irises. Then you will know a lot about the irises: illustrations of the parts of the Iris flower, information on rhizomes and you will make a tour of the various Iris genus ranging from the familiar bearded Iris, the Siberians, the Ensatas, the Louisianas and the species. A chapter also presents detailed instructions on growing Iris from original plantings to the "thinning out" process that occurs with most perennials, in addition to a thorough discussion of diseases and pests of these plants.

For each group of Iris, he provides excellent cultural information and beautiful photographs of the species discussed. All the pictures were taken by him in various gardens.

The last chapter of the book encourages even the amateur to try their hand at hybridizing their own.

At the end you will discover many pictures on how to grow irises in various landscapes. Places to see iris gardens and where to buy irises are also included in the book.
