Dried stalks of straw in garden plot - Straw has several advantages over other mulches. Unlike straw, plastic mulch is impermeable. Rain and irrigation cannot penetrate plain plastic. Special permeable plastic will allow rain to penetrate, but permeable plastic is more expensive than regular sheet plastic and much more expensive than straw. Straw is easier to lay down and remove than stone.
