Photo of Liquidambar Oconee (sweetgum)
Liquidambar styraciflua Oconee - This is rounded, multi-stemmed shrub. An excellent deciduous tree for a lawn where its roots can spread. The picturesque habit and superb fall color distinguish it from other trees. This sweetgum is a more rounded and smaller version of the species. Star-shaped leaves are reminiscent of some maples. They have 5-7 lobes and appear either alternate or palmate and medium green and glossy, turning to strikingly rich reddish purple. Leaves are followed by mace-like fruit clusters. Mature height is around 8-10' high by 6-8' wide. Fall color holds for 3 to 4 weeks. Family : Hamamelidaceae
