Photo of Acer pensylvanicum (snakebark maple)
Acer pensylvanicum - snakebark maple - moose maple - It is a shrubby understory maple that is native to moist, rocky forests. It typically grows as a large shrub or small tree to 15-25’ tall (less frequently to 40’ tall) with a rounded but uneven crown that is sometimes flat-topped. Greenish bark on young branches and young trunks is vertically marked with distinctive white stripes. Stripes may vanish over time as older bark turns reddish brown. Obovate, double-serrulate, three-lobed leaves emerge with pink hues in spring, mature to dark green by summer and turn bright yellow in fall. Small yellow flowers bloom in pendant racemes in spring Familly : Sapindaceae.
