Photo of Gleditsia Sunburst - bark (Honey Locust)
Gleditsia triancanthos Sunburst - A deciduous tree 30-70 ft (9-21 m) with a rounded crown. Leaves golden on new growth changing to bright green. Stems shining, smooth, and reddish to greenish-brown. Fruitless. Fast growing. Apparently susceptible to Nectria canker. Introduced in 1957, very popular cultivar. 'Sunburst' tends to have a rather 'free-spirited' growth habit, particularly in windy positions, which can be embraced to great effect for naturalistic, multistem planting. However it can also be very effective as a standard (single trunk) form with good formative pruning and occasional maintenance pruning as required. Family: Fabaceae
