Photo of Malus Newton Pippin (Apple tree fruit pomme)
Malus domestica Newton Pippin - Apple tree fruit pomme - It is one of the oldest American apple varieties, being well-known in the 18th century and probably raised as a seedling by early settlers on Long Island. It is best regarded as a "winter" apple. It is picked quite late in the season - late October. are medium and variable in shape, tending toward flat or oblong with ribbing. They have a green or yellow skin, sometimes with a pink blush and lenticels. The dense and juicy flesh is yellow to greenish-white. The flavor is excellent, balanced between sweet and acidic, honeyed and refreshing with notes of pineapple. The flavor is best after the apple has been stored for at least a month, rather than picked straight from the tree. Family: Rosaceae
